Historical Development of TR - ANSWER- -began in USA with the development of specialty schools, institutions, or hospitals for persons with visual impairment, physical disabilities, emotional disorders or developmental disabilities -has roots in playground movement (created to prevent delinquency) -In WWI, the Red Cross used recreational activities to treat veterans -WWII, Red Cross employed and trained recreation leaders 1930s - ANSWER- Menninger Clinic -used activities to help clients learn to reduce tension, anxiety, and release aggression appropriately 1950s - 1960s - ANSWER- Comeback, Inc -established by Beatrice Hill -promoted recreational services in the community for non-institutionalized people with disabilities -also promoted recreation fro personas who were hospitalized or ina a special school or nursing home. -San Francisco Recreation Cent for the Handicapped was established -community based recreation programs for people with disabilities continued to grow 1980s - ANSWER- -hospitals needed accountability for quality, appropriateness, and outcome of their services
