Authoritarian/Dictatorial: Parent controls the child's behavior with no
question… “My way or the highway”
Permissive: Parent has little control over child; Consults child
Authoritative/Democratic: Parent sets rules and gives explanation;
consequences with disobedience (Best Parenting Style)
Passive: Parent uninvolved in child's behavior… “Do whatever you want”

Piaget: Cognitive development
Stage 1: Sensory Motor Stage (Birth to 2 years)... Goal: Object permanence
(starts around 9 months)
Stage 2: Pre-operational (2-7 years)... Goal: Symbolic thought
Stage 3: Concrete thought (7-11 years).....Goal: Operational thought
(Perspective of others, empathy, less self centered)
Stage 4: Formal Operational (11-Adulthood)....Goal: Grasp abstract concepts

Trust vs. Mistrust (Birth- 18 mos)
Autonomy vs. shame and doubt (18 mos - 3 yrs) “I can do it myself”

Practices:
Keep medical equipment out of site until ready to use
Age appropriate language
Demonstrate assessment on doll or toy
Allow child to handle equipment or play equipment
Role play
Allow child to sit on the parent's lap
Keep parents in room if need be
