1. Define what is meant by a death system. Then identify and explain some of the elements
and functions of a death system. (Two paragraphs 8-points)
In simple terms, a death system is the way in which a society influences the way we think
and feel about death. The way everyone copes with death is different, depending on personal
experiences or lack thereof and what we are taught. Some elements of a death system include
different psychological, emotional, and behavioral factors. In the readings, there were also
passages that spoke about different societal upbringings to include informal and formal education
of death throughout the lifecycle. One topic I found very interesting relating to the topic was the
informal education of young children and how beneficial informal education proves to be as they
grow older.
It functions as a go-by, if you will. The main function being, to teach an individual how
to think, feel, and act regarding death and dying. This mostly speaks on society as a whole but
also taking into account that your family or specific group to maintain the system as well. Going
back to how you are brought up, if you are taught how to cope and express yourself during the
process of mourning, you are more likely to utilize those tools rather than falling victim to
depression or other unfavorable tendencies.

2. Provide a detailed definition of grief, bereavement and mourning; explain how they are
similar, unrelated, or different. Give examples of each, including your thoughts. (Two
paragraphs 7-points)
Grief, in general terms, describes all of the different aspects in an individual’s response to
loss. This is usually experienced when you lose someone close to you but that is not always
the case. Bereavement is that period of expression after a loss. During this time is typically
when an individual is going through the process of getting back to “normal” after
experiencing a loss. Mourning describes the actual expression, or lack thereof, after a loss.
Everyone mourns differently, whether it be obvious sorrow or being more adventurous than
they typically are.
These three terms are very similar, I found it difficult to describe them independently. I
believe individuals experience all three after a loss, whether that person was an immediate
family member or not. Grief incorporates all of the aspects following a death in terms of how
the individual begins to cope. This can include how they physically feel to their spiritual
feelings; grief, in my opinion is the process. Bereavement is the period of that process, how
the person begins to and continues to cope. Mourning is the actual expression, whether a
typical expression or not, of grief during that period of bereavement.
