A. “It is extraordinary to me,” said he, “that you people cannot take care of
yourselves and your children. One or the other of you is for ever in the way.

1) Monsier the Marquis is speaking in the quoted sentence.
The horse carriage of Monsieur was running down on a road when the horse
killed a poor child unintentionally. A few people didn’t let the horse run away.
2) The man threw a gold coin towards the driver of the carriage to compensate
the death of the poor child.
3) This shows that the speaker is a man full of himself and pride into thinking
that a gold coin is worth the life of human.
4) As a result of the incident, the child dies and everybody got to know what kind
of a man Monsieur really is.
5) The significance of the incident to the rest of the story is that the Monsieur
who neglected the killing of an innocent child by this horse is later on killed by
the peasant whose son died when he had followed Monsieur to his place.
B. “Eighteen years!” said the passenger , looking at the sun. “Gracious
Creator of the day! To be buried alive for eighteen years!”
6) The passenger speaking is Mr. Lorry.
7) He kept waking up from a dream imagining that this specter was talking to
him about being buried for 18 years.
