He was a part ofthe group that raised the American flag at Iwo Jima in 1945 on Mt. Surabachi. His Indian identity made him an instant hero and let to his return to the United States to promote a new war bond drive. He was overexposed by the government and was troubled by the publicity that he received. He was an example of failed reintegration. 2 Leonard Peltier 1975 (Ashinabe-Dakota): Red power activist; participation with AIM involved him in a firefight in 1975 near Oglala, SD (post Wounded Knee). Two FBI agents were killed. He was convicted fortheir deaths and imprisoned in 1977.
