Introduction
This chapter provides an introduction and overview of the basics of the construction
process. The construction industry is one of the largest business sectors in the United
States, encompassing establishments engaged in the construction of buildings and other
engineering projects, such as roadways and utility infrastructure. Construction with all of its
related and supporting industries is vital to the economic health of the country, accounting
for an annual average of 5 to 10 percent of our gross domestic product.
