This task will analyze the data from thirty students who completed a Middle School 8th
grade Summative Assessment given after an English lesson on Figurative Language, at the end
of a larger unit on Literary Response and Analysis. There are 16 males and 14 females, 14 of
them being white, 5 black, 6 Hispanic, and 5 Asian or other. The academic levels include 24
students who are at or above grade level and 6 who are below grade level.
Interpretation of Summative Assessment Data
This summative assessment was given at the end of an English lesson on Figurative
Language, at the end of a larger unit on Literary Response and Analysis. The assessment
covers the seven types of figurative language taught throughout the unit in previous lessons
and includes an objective and performance section. The average cumulative score for all 30
students is 75%-- this can be broken down further: the average for the 24 students
academically at or above grade level is 75.5%, and the average for the 6 students academically
below grade level is 59%. The three lowest cumulative scores are 52% and 59% and the
correlating factor between these three students is that they come from low-income families
(FRED status). The highest score from students academically below grade level is the lowest
score from students at or above. These students may not receive the support and motivation at
home to complete homework assignments and study the terms enough to grasp the concepts.
In the objective section of the assessment there are ten questions where students are to
choose the correct type of figurative language used in each given sentence, with four options
