2. What do you think could be challenging to apply evidence-based practice in nursing care? How
can you overcome these when you become a nurse?
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the use of the best available research evidence, clinical
expertise, and patient preferences to guide nursing decisions and interventions. EBP can
improve the quality, safety, and effectiveness of nursing care, as well as reduce costs and
enhance patient outcomes. However, there are some challenges to applying EBP in nursing care,
such as:
- Lack of time, resources, and skills to access, appraise, and implement research evidence
- Resistance to change and low motivation among nurses and other health care providers
- Inconsistency and variability in the availability and quality of research evidence
- Conflicting or contradictory findings from different studies or sources
- Ethical, legal, cultural, or organizational barriers that limit the applicability or feasibility of
EBP
To overcome these challenges, nurses need to:
- Develop a culture of inquiry and curiosity that values EBP and supports lifelong learning
- Seek out and participate in educational opportunities and mentorship programs that enhance
EBP knowledge and skills
- Collaborate with other nurses, researchers, and stakeholders to identify, prioritize, and address
clinical problems and questions
- Use reliable and user-friendly tools and resources to access, appraise, and synthesize research
evidence
- Apply critical thinking and clinical judgment to integrate research evidence with clinical
expertise and patient preferences
- Evaluate the outcomes and impact of EBP interventions and share the results and feedback
with others
- Advocate for organizational policies and practices that facilitate EBP implementation and
dissemination
