Course Information_______________________________________________________________________________ Section Information: NURS 3381 PSYCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSING OF INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, AND GROUPS –Sections 600 and 601. Time and Place of Class Meetings: Class activities will be conducted online. Exams will be administered online using video-proctoring software in Canvas and ATI Testing Proctorio. Description of Course Content: NURS 3381 PSYCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSING OF INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, AND GROUPS. Application of the nursing process with emphasis on critical thinking, therapeutic nursing interventions, and effective communication and interpersonal skills as they relate to persons with psychiatric mental health conditions. Prerequisite: NURS 3632. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrates the ability to accurately perform a mental-status assessment. 2. Demonstrates use of therapeutic communication techniques and effective interpersonal skills in provision of care to the clients across the life span. 3. Describes the related dosages, therapeutic effects, side effects, toxic effects and nursing actions of psychotropic medication classifications. 4. Identifies the psychological and psychosocial effects of disease, trauma and hospitalization on the client and family experiencing psychiatric mental health illnesses. 5. Demonstrates the ability to use critical analysis and logical reasoning in analyzing data and setting priorities in developing a plan of care for client diagnosed with a mental illness. 6. Describes safe and effective nursing care for the client diagnosed with a mental illness. 7. Assess client for symptoms of substance dependency, withdrawal or toxicity. 8. Assess the client for self-injury and identify key elements of suicide precautions. 9. Identifies the dimensions of a crisis and the nursing actions that promote adaptive coping during disasters, pandemics, bioterrorism. 10. Demonstrates collaboration in establishing priorities for the provision of competent and cost-effective health care that promotes health and prevents illness. 11. Articulates awareness of legal and ethical standards and scope of practice related to mental health nursing. 12.
