Course Description
This course builds upon prior learning to further develop clinical decision-making skills.
Students use clinical evidence to plan care for individuals of diverse backgrounds within
à structured environment. The nursing process forms the framework for prioritizing care
and making basic delegation decisions. A holistic approach focuses on caring for
individuals experiencing common health care problems with primary pathology in the
endocrine, gastro-intestinal, genito-urinary, musculo-skeletal, and neurologic systems.
Actual and simulated clinical experiences provide students with opportunities to
demonstrate competency in the delivery of nursing care in selected client situations.
Prerequisite: PNR201
Total Contact Hours: 160 (40 for Lecture, 10 for Laboratory, 30 for Simulation, 80
for Clinical); Out-of-Class Work: 102 hours; Quarter Credit Hours: 8.0
Student Learning Outcomes
1. Provide safe patient care with a focus on continuous quality improvement.
2. Demonstrate competency within the LPN scope of practice related to clinical
decision making, patient safety, infection control, and pharmacological and parental
therapies in the provision of care for individuals and families.
3. Establish and maintain effective interpersonal and therapeutic relationships and
contribute to the plan of nursing care to promote and maximize individual health and
wellness.
4. Demonstrate competence in the use of the nursing process to apply critical thinking
and problem solving skills in caring for the needs of the patient and families,
including health promotion and maintenance, illness care, end-of-life care,
restoration, and rehabilitation.
5. Communicate effectively using written, verbal, non-verbal and technological
methods to provide patient centered nursing care in collaboration with the health
care team.
6. Promote health and wellness using principles of teaching-learning and leadership
while working collaboratively with the client, family, and interdisciplinary health care
team to achieve expected health outcomes.
7. Use knowledge from nursing science in collaboration with other health care
providers to provide nursing care for individuals of various cultures and
developmental stages in diverse health care environments.
8. Use self-evaluation, reflection and ongoing learning to demonstrate personal and
professional growth and continued competence.

Course Objectives
In this course, students will:
1. Analyze the role of the practical nurse in promoting, maintaining, and restoring
health in adults with commonly occurring acute and chronic health problems. (SLO1)
2. Develop nursing care plans / maps to provide individual care within the scope of the
practical nurse to adults experiencing acute and chronic health problems. (SLO- 2,
4)
3. Implement decision-making skills necessary to anticipate client needs and effectively
contribute to the health care team in caring for clients with acute and chronic health
problems. (SLO-1, 2, 4)
4. Incorporate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to function as a member
of the health care team to manage the health needs of clients with diverse
backgrounds. (SLO-2, 7)
5. Apply leadership and patient care management principles in providing care of the
client within a complex healthcare system. (SLO- 5, 6)
6. Integrate effective communication skills into the provision of client-centered nursing
care. (SLO-3, 5, 6)
7. Demonstrate competence in the performance of skills to promote, maintain, and
restore health. (SLO- 1, 2, 4)
8. Use principles of teaching-learning while performing in LPN nursing roles to address
