Chapter 1: Introduction to Medical Assisting LEARNING OUTCOMES After completing Chapter 1, the students should be able to: 1.1 Recognize the duties and responsibilities of a medical assistant. 1.2 Distinguish various organizations related to the medical assisting profession. 1.3 Explain the need for and importance of medical assisting credentials. 1.4 Identify the training needed to become a professional medical assistant. 1.5 Discuss professional development as it relates to medical assisting education. Lecture Outline Learning Outcome 1.1: Recognize the duties and responsibilities of a medical assistant. Lecture Topics o Review the diverse nature of the entry-level and advanced duties of the medical assistant, including general, administrative, clinical, and laboratory. (Refer to Table 1-1: Daily Duties of Medical Assistants and PowerPoint Slide 3) o Distinguish type of facility, kind of specialty, etc. o Describe role of medical assistant as patient navigator, to coordinate resources and connect diverse professionals for care. Discussion Points o Discuss the variety of settings in which medical assistants can work and the roles they can play in each. o Describe the role of the medical assistant as a patient navigator, and the importance of the medical assistant as a link between collaborating professionals to ensure integrated patient care. Learning Activities o Give each student a large piece of art paper. Ask the student to draw a circle in the middle of the paper and write the word “patient”. Have the student create a patient scenario and draw lines to the other health professionals who would need to be involved in the patient’s care.
