PSYCHIATRIC NURSING ●Interpersonal process whereby the nurse through the THERAPEUTIC USE OF SELF assist an individual family, group or community to promote mental health, to prevent mental illness and suffering, to participate in the treatment and rehabilitation of the mentally ill and if necessary to find meaning in these experiences (interpersonal relationship) MENTAL HEALTH ●A state of emotional, psychological and social wellness evidenced by satisfying interpersonal relationships, effective behavior and coping, positive self-concept and emotional stability. COMPONENTS OF MENTAL HEALTH ● 1. self awareness - ie.body image, personal identity ● 2. self actualization- growth and development, potentials and interests ● 3. integrative capacity- ability to tolerate frustrations, balance of ego, superego, id ● 4. autonomous behavior- to make own decisions ● 5. perception of reality- how a person perceives his environment ● 6. mastery of one’s environment- ability to cope and adjust COMPONENTS OF MENTAL HEALTH • Autonomy and Independence-can work interdependently without losing autonomy • Maximization of One’s Potential-oriented towards growth and self-actualization • Tolerance of Life’s Uncertainties-can face the challenges of day-to-day living with hope & positive look • Self-esteem-has realistic awareness of her abilities and limitations • Mastery of the Environment-can deal with and influence the environment • Reality Orientation-can distinguish the real world from a dream, fact from fantasy SELF-AWARENESS – is the process of developing an understanding of one’s own values, beliefs, thoughts, feelings, attitudes, motivations, prejudices, strengths, and limitations and how these qualities affect others.
