This week's graded topics relate to the following Course Outcomes (COs). • CO 2: Apply research principles to the interpretation of the content of published research studies. (POs 4 & 8) • CO 4: Evaluate published nursing research for credibility and significance related to evidence-based practice. (POs 4 & 8) This week we learned how research designs are different and help us to objectively study nursing problems; the key is to decide which type of research and design will serve the purpose or intent to find a solution. After completing Week 4 readings and lesson, answer the following: • Reflect on your learning about Quantitative and Qualitative research; share two ways that helped you understand how they are different. • Chose one category of study design that you found interesting and describe; include how you believe it can help study nursing problems. • Refer back to your article you located for your Week 3 Assignment and answer the following: (*if you were unsuccessful with your article search, search the library again for an article) o Locate and describe the type of research and the study design. o Explain how the design supported the purpose/intent of the study. Professor and class, Quantitative research has visible quantifiable outcomes which guides the researcher in the use of the appropriate evidence-based practice. As stated by Houser, “The nature of nursing care involves helping others attain their health goals, many of which are defined by the individual, not the nurse” (Houser, 2018). Quantitative research is also unbiased and doesn’t take personal experiences or opinion into account. Qualitative research focuses on the interpretation of the individual, there is no measurable outcome and “The researcher establishes a relationship with the subject and bias is considered an inherent part of the research process” (Houser, 2018). The design of research that I find interesting is quasi- experimental research. I feel this research can be more of a hands on kind of research, where the researcher can directly test the interventions on the patients. For example, instead of always using oral pain medications on a patient experiencing pain, things such as musical and art therapy, hot or cold compresses, or massages can be applied to the area or focus of pain before giving any oral pain medications. The article I chose for the week 3 assignment falls under a prospective cohort study. This research requires the researcher to plan the area of research in advance and to follow it for a specified period of time. The research also used a control group. The article supported my PICOT question. The PICOT question stated, In adult surgical patients, what is the effects of chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) baths or wipes pre-op compared to not using CHG baths or wipes pre-op on surgical site infections with 30 days post-op? According to Graling and Vasaly, “The results indicated a statistically significant overall reduction of infection in the group that received a 2% CHG cloth bath before surgery” (Graling and Vasaly, 2013). The evidence of research can be used to apply the intervention to prevent or decrease surgical site infections in the surgical patients. The design supported the study by using unbiased and measurable outcomes in the research. Amanda Reference Graling, P. R., & Vasaly, F. W. (2013).
