Leadership Crisis at Uber
One of the fastest-growing technology companies is Uber. It is a car-hailing application
that has revolutionized the manner that people travel. Even so, the company had been facing
issues with its company culture whereby the leadership failed to deal with issues such as sexual
harassment and gender pay gap (Griffith, Van Esch, & Trittenbach, 2018). Unfortunately, for the
case of Uber, the aforementioned issues stem from the top leadership where CEO Travis
Kalanick had been accused of different instances of sexual harassment. Given that, it means that
Uber did not have effective leadership which ensured that employees are treated equally. That
damaged the reputation of the company by a great deal. To give an illustration, there have been
numerous campaigns on social media such as #deleteUber which have generated negative
publicity for the company. Due to that, Kalanick had to step down from the leadership position at
Uber and he was replaced by Khosrowshahi who had been termed as one of the most progressive
leaders in the technology industry. That being the case, it means that he is going to lead the effort
to ensure that sexual harassment will not occur in the organization and the gender pay gap is
completely eliminated.

Even so, Khosrowshahi also faced different issues in the process of effecting change at
Uber. For instance, it was not easy to fill the shoes of Kalanick who was the CEO and founder of
Uber. In this case, it means that Khosrowshahi afraid of being involved in factional politics in the
organization. As well, he faced issues with winning the trust of the employees due to the fact that
Kalanick was still very popular among the employees. Notably, it was hard for the new CEO of
the company to imagine that Kalanick would be happy to stay on the sidelines. Such issues
affected the company in a manner that is negative.
Performance Plan
Given the issues that were facing Uber, the five practices of exemplary leadership which
were created by Kouzes and Posner can be used in turning the organization around (Elahi, 2015).
Firstly, the new CEO Kalanick should model the way for Uber. In this case, it means that he will
behave in a manner that can be emulated by other employees in the organization. For example,
the new CEO can start by setting the behavioral standards for the organization. Secondly,
Kalanick should work to inspire a shared vision at Uber. Notably, it means that Kalanick will
work to enlist the employees of Uber toward working towards a common vision for the
company. In such an instance, Kalanick can work to appeal to the values of the employees on the
journey to make the organization function much better.
Thirdly, Kalanick should put in place strategies that are meant to challenge the status quo
in the organization. In this instance, the status quo at Uber has been linked to the gender pay gap
and cases of sexual harassment in the firm. That being the case, Kalanick should enforce
measures that are meant to challenge the status quo in the institution, for example, zero tolerance
