The elementary school in video 1163 is in an urban area. The class is made up of twelve
students, from both fourth and fifth grade, and they range in age between nine to eleven. After
viewing the video, it looks like the students are made up of seven girls and four boys. They are
in the Concrete Operational Stage of Piaget’s cognitive development. We know that they are in
this stage due to their age. These students are in the class because they were chosen based on
their art ability. There are five students that are considered gifted in art. The other seven were
chosen for the class because of their interest, enthusiasm, or their energy.
The students have diverse cultures, socio-economic backgrounds, and diverse
background knowledge. Their cultures include Latino, African American, South Asian, and
Caucasian. Two of the students are ESOL/HILT. There are also a few other challenges in this
classroom. Two of the students are technophobic and are not as well versed as the others in the
use of technology due to not having the resources available at home. When looking at their
background knowledge there are some students that have a greater background knowledge than
the others. The ones that have a greater background knowledge are members of extracurricular
