1. In your own words, briefly define (i.e. no more than a paragraph each) the concepts
of Ends, Ways, and Means. In your answer explain how Ends, Ways and Means are
used together to create a strategy. (10 pts)
The main objective of any strategy to be deployed, particularly in military
campaigns and operations, is the critical relationship between ends, ways, and means.
The crucial relationship between ends, ways, and means must be well understood by
everyone to be involved, logical, and practical enough to ensure that any operation is
successful1
. Whenever ends, ways, and means are not clearly understood and
defined, an entire process is seriously flawed, resulting in negative impacts.
Ends in a strategy are the primary goals of an operation. In that regard, any
military operation to be carried out must have the primary objectives to be achieved in
support of national security, such as total victory or conditional victory. 2The military
operation’s primary goals outline the mission requirements that the military shall be
aiming at accomplishing at the end of the operation.
Means outlines the various resources that are to be used to achieve set goals.
Military operations must be enabled through resources such as equipped armies,
weaponry, and finances. As such, ends outline the criteria for success in an operation.
Further, any military operation has its primary goals, which must ultimately be
achieved. Ways try to justify how the objectives of any operation are likely to be
pursued successfully.3 Without a doubt, it is the link between the end and means as
ways to comprehensively detail the various actions to be deployed in a military
operation. Consequently, ways define the functional design of a military operation
