Introduction
This task will analyze the data from thirty students who completed a Middle School
Earth Science exam. There are 16 males and 14 females, 14 of them being white, 5 black, 6
Hispanic, and 5 Asian or other. The academic levels include 14 students who are at or above
grade level and 6 who are below grade level. The exam consists of performance and objective
items that align with Middle School Common Core Standards and objectives.
Objective-Based Section Identification
The Middle School Earth Science Exam being analyzed is divided into three parts: (1)
multiple choice, (2) matching, and (3) written response. Parts one and two are comprised of
objective items and part three is comprised of performance items. The objective for parts one
and two states that the student will be able to identify the layers of the Earth's interior with 85?curacy. This objective is assessed through five multiple choice questions and five matching
questions about the earth’s layers, with only one correct answer per question. Each question is
worth two points.
Objective-Based Section Analysis
The overall student performance for the objective portion of this exam consisted of the
following scores: average (or mean): 75%, median: 80%, mode: 80%, range: 50-100%. Out of
seven students whose academic level is higher than grade level, six of them scored 80% or
higher on the objective items and only one student who is at grade level scored 100%. The six
students whose academic level is lower than grade level scored between 50-70%. The lowest
