Pneumothorax: Answer complete or partial collapse of a lung as a result of an accumulation of air in the pleural space 4. Tension pneumothorax: Answer The continued accumulation of air in the pleural space causes: - mediastinal shift - Tracheal deviation - Compression of the lung on the affected side 5. Hemothorax: Answer when blood accumulates in the pleural space resulting from injuryto the chest wall, diaphragm, lung, blood vessels, or mediastinum - requires immediate insertion of a chest tube for evacuation of the blood
