1. Setting

The setting was a calm and peaceful environment thus there was no noise in the background.

Moreover, the room was dimly lit but brimming with optimistic posters. To me, the atmosphere

was quiet and peaceful.

2. Appearance and Motor Activity of Client

When the client began speaking about her mother, she did break down in tears. After

discussing her mother, she attempted to make jokes and laughed little. We were seated at the

table; I was next to her.

3. Interaction

Nursing Student Patient Remarks Alternative Response

How are you? It's been a

week.

So, what do you wish to

refrain from?

What are your goals here,

and how are you going

about achieving them?

I am good. How

about you?

I've absolutely lost

myself. I date men

who are unconcerned

about me or my

children, and I

always choose men

above my children.

I've always been

around drugs and

want to put an end to

them.

I want to put an end

to my relapses. I

want to be a good

example for my

children; I want to

spend time with

them and witness

I felt apprehensive about

asking questions.

"revealing the contents

of a can of worms".

Additionally, I was

concerned of saying

anything incorrectly or

offensively that I did not

intend or that may have

been misconstrued.

When the client begins

to speak about her

mother, she begins to

cry. Several pauses of

around 5 minutes each.

Here, the client is still

emotional but begins to

chuckle when she shares

some outrageous

anecdotes.

Here, I wish I had been more

empathic. It sounds as though

she had a difficult existence. I

wasn't sure how to say that

succinctly at the time.
