1. Analyze a nurse manager’s role as it relates to a minimum of five of the major course concepts
addressed (ethics in leadership, emotional intelligence, communication, conflict resolution, change
theory, cultural competence/diversity, labor relations management, leadership models, management
theory, motivational theory, Nurse of the Future competencies, interprofessional collaboration, and
team building).
A nurse manager's role is complex and multifaceted, requiring a range of skills and knowledge to
effectively lead and manage a nursing team. In this paper, I will analyze a nurse manager's role as it
relates to five of the major course concepts addressed: ethics in leadership, emotional intelligence,
communication, conflict resolution, and interprofessional collaboration.
Ethics in leadership is the foundation of a nurse manager's role, as it guides their decision-making,
actions, and interactions with others. A nurse manager must uphold the ethical principles of nursing,
such as respect, autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, justice, and fidelity, and ensure that their
staff follow these principles as well. A nurse manager must also demonstrate ethical leadership by
being honest, transparent, accountable, fair, and respectful of diversity and cultural competence.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage one's own emotions and
those of others. A nurse manager needs emotional intelligence to cope with the stress and challenges
of their role, such as managing change, resolving conflicts, motivating staff, and dealing with
difficult situations. A nurse manager with high emotional intelligence can also foster a positive
work environment by being empathetic, supportive, compassionate, and optimistic.
Communication is the key to effective leadership and management in nursing. A nurse manager
must communicate clearly, concisely, accurately, and respectfully with their staff, patients, families,
colleagues, and other stakeholders. A nurse manager must also use various modes and methods of
communication, such as verbal, nonverbal, written, electronic, and visual communication. A nurse
manager must also be an active listener, giving feedback, asking questions, clarifying information,
and acknowledging others' perspectives.
Conflict resolution is the process of finding constructive solutions to disagreements or disputes that
arise in the workplace. A nurse manager must be able to identify the sources and types of conflict,
such as interpersonal, intragroup, intergroup, or organizational conflict. A nurse manager must also
be able to apply different strategies and techniques to resolve conflict, such as negotiation,
mediation, arbitration, or collaboration. A nurse manager must also be able to prevent or minimize
conflict by establishing clear expectations, roles, responsibilities, and policies.
Interprofessional collaboration is the practice of working together with other health professionals
from different disciplines to provide holistic and patient-centered care. A nurse manager must
promote interprofessional collaboration by creating a culture of respect, trust, communication, and
shared decision-making among their staff and other health care providers. A nurse manager must
also facilitate interprofessional collaboration by coordinating care delivery, providing education and
training opportunities, and participating in quality improvement initiatives.
