1. a. The word pharmacology comes from the Greek word pharmakon, which means drug or
medicine. Pharmacology is the study of drugs and their interaction with living organisms.
b. The Latin word medicina means ―remedy or cure,‖ and it is where our words medicine
and medication come from. Medicine refers to a drug that is administered for its value as
a preventive, diagnostic, or therapeutic agent.
c. The word drug is derived from the Dutch word droog, which means ―dry‖ and refers to
the use of dried herbs and plants as the first medicines. A drug can be thought of as any
nonfood chemical substance that affects the mind or the body.
