Chapter 1: Training and Development Strategy
LO 1-1: Describe the elements that contribute to training and development strategy.
1. Key Concepts
a. Training and development strategy must be in alignment with the company’s
internal environment, the external environment in which the organization
functions, and the company strategy
b. Internal Environment includes task, people, social, and organization
environment
2. Suggested Teaching
a. Explain Exhibit 1-1 at the beginning of the chapter
b. Discuss importance of talent strategy--opening vignette of chapter
c. Start discussion with students about their perception of training and
development and how they think business strategy plays an impact
LO 1-2: Assess the external environment for training and development opportunities and
challenges.
