(1) alarm, (2) resistance, and (3) exhaustion.
2. Stage I - Alarm - "Fight of Flight"

• Mobilize resources and defenses
• Ifstressor is not alleviated, move to Stage II
3. Stage II – Resistance

• Level 2 - 3 (moderate to severe)
• Individual strives to adapt to stress
• Decreased ability to learn or problem solve
• If stressor is prolongedor overwhelming, move to Stage III
4. Stage III – Exhaustion

• Level 3 - 4 (severe to panic)
• Body is entirely depletedand immunity is weakened
• Defense mechanisms are dysfunctional and thinking is illogical (poor decision
making)
• Delusions and hallucinations occur
• Patient canbecome violent, suicidal, or completely immobilized
• Can lead to death, due to exhaustion!!!
